Gila Woodpeckers are an interesting bird. They are found mostly in the Sonoran Desert region of Southern Arizona, California and New Mexico. Also Northern Mexico.
I first encountered one on my second day here. I was quietly drinking my first cup of coffee in the morning and watching the news. Suddenly there was this explosive, drawn out banging, coming from right behind me. Sounded like an assault rifle. Didn’t know what it was.
I went outside to check and found nothing. It happened on a regular basis over the next few days. Finally I asked a neighbor what it could be. They laughed and told me it was a Gila Woodpecker. Apparently they like to drum on things that make a loud noise, like aluminum siding. It’s a territorial thing I guess
